We recently completed a bespoke retro café seating project for Portmeirion Town Hall Café, helping bring a vibrant 1950s-inspired dining environment to life with a full range of custom-made booth seating, retro dining chairs, and classic American diner-style table tops.
Designed to capture the nostalgic character of a traditional retro café, the project combined bold colours, fluted detailing, chrome finishes, and classic diner styling throughout the interior. The café itself features a mixture of indoor dining areas, takeaway seating, a bar area, and terrace spaces, creating a lively and visually distinctive hospitality environment for visitors.
For this installation, we manufactured a complete range of bespoke retro fluted booth and banquette seating upholstered in Chieftain Fabrics’ Just Colour – Applemint fabric. The fresh pastel green finish worked perfectly within the 1950s-inspired concept, helping to create the bright, playful atmosphere associated with classic American diner interiors.
Alongside the booth seating, we also produced a collection of matching retro-style dining chairs, bespoke manufactured in our UK workshop to complement the seating layout and maintain a consistent visual identity across the café interior.
To complete the look, we supplied our distinctive retro ribbed-edge table tops featuring chrome edging and white laminate surfaces — a signature diner-inspired finish that tied the entire scheme together and reinforced the authentic 1950s aesthetic throughout the space.
The fluted back detailing across the booth seating introduced texture and depth while remaining true to the retro styling of the project. Combined with the chrome-edged tables and bespoke seating layouts, the result was a highly immersive café environment with a strong visual identity and practical commercial durability.
As with all of our hospitality furniture projects, every seating unit and table top was manufactured to order in our UK workshop using contract-grade materials designed for busy commercial use. This ensured the café achieved not only the desired visual impact, but also the long-term durability required for a high-traffic hospitality environment.
