This project for Air Business in Hatfield, England, brought together a modern office fit-out with a clear focus on functionality, comfort and spatial clarity. Working in collaboration with Business Environments as the fit-out partner, the brief centred on transforming an open-plan workplace into a series of well-defined zones that support both focused work and informal collaboration.
HCF Contract Furniture was appointed to supply a combination of acoustic meeting pods and breakout seating, helping to introduce privacy, improve usability and enhance the overall look and feel of the space. The result is a cohesive workplace environment where carefully considered furniture solutions play a central role in how the office is used day-to-day.
Fit-Out Scope & Collaboration
From the outset, the project required a balance between openness and structure. Like many contemporary offices, Air Business needed to maintain the benefits of an open-plan layout while addressing common challenges such as noise, lack of privacy and underutilised communal areas.
Working closely with Business Environments, the layout was developed to introduce distinct yet connected zones. Acoustic meeting pods were positioned to create enclosed spaces for calls and meetings, while a large breakout seating area was designed to support informal interaction, downtime and flexible working.
This collaborative approach ensured that furniture wasn’t treated as an afterthought, but as an integral part of the overall workplace strategy—supporting both the aesthetic and functional goals of the fit-out.
Acoustic Meeting Pods for Open-Plan Offices
A key feature of the project was the installation of five 1300mm open acoustic meeting pods alongside one smaller 750mm pod with a back panel. These units were selected to provide a mix of semi-private and more enclosed spaces, giving staff flexibility depending on the task at hand.
Designed specifically for modern workplaces, these pods help to address one of the biggest challenges in open-plan offices, noise. By introducing dedicated areas for calls, meetings and focused work, they allow the wider office to function more smoothly without disruption.

Beyond their spatial role, the pods in this project incorporated practical features that enhance everyday usability. Integrated PIR sensor dimmable lighting ensures that each pod is only illuminated when in use, contributing to both energy efficiency and user comfort. The lighting adjusts automatically, creating a softer, more considered environment for meetings.
Under-seat storage was also built into the pod seating, providing a discreet and practical solution for keeping bags, laptops or documents out of sight. This small detail makes a noticeable difference in maintaining a clean and uncluttered workspace—particularly in shared office environments.
Visually, the pods create rhythm within the open-plan layout. Their consistent scale and placement help to break up the space without making it feel crowded, reinforcing the idea of clearly defined zones while maintaining an overall sense of openness.
Breakout Seating Area with Serene One Banquette Seating
Alongside the meeting pods, a large breakout seating area was developed to serve as a central hub within the office. This space was designed to feel relaxed and inviting, encouraging informal meetings, collaboration and downtime away from desks.
To achieve this, the project utilised Serene One banquette seating from HCF’s Booth & Banquette Seating collection. This range is particularly well-suited to office environments, offering a clean, contemporary aesthetic with a deeper seat profile that supports comfort over longer periods.
The use of banquette seating in an office setting reflects a growing trend in workplace design, bringing elements traditionally seen in hospitality into commercial interiors. For broader applications, this approach can also be seen in restaurant booth seating, where comfort and space efficiency are equally important.

In this project, the Serene One units were arranged to create a defined seating zone that feels separate from the main workspace without being isolated. The layout supports a range of uses, from casual conversations to laptop work, making it a versatile addition to the office.

Importantly, the seating helps to anchor the space visually. It introduces a sense of structure while maintaining a softer, more relaxed atmosphere—something that is essential in modern workplace design.
Material & Fabric Specification
A key part of the project’s success lies in the careful selection of materials, particularly the use of Camira Fabrics across both the acoustic pods and breakout seating.
Inside the pods, Camira Blazer Newcastle was used to create a warm, textured interior that feels comfortable and inviting. This was paired with Camira Mainline Watford on the exterior, offering a durable and visually consistent outer finish that works well within the wider office palette.
The pod seating itself was upholstered in Camira Patternmaker Crosshatch, introducing subtle pattern and depth without overwhelming the space. This combination ensures that the pods feel considered from every angle, whether viewed externally or used internally.
In the breakout area, the banquette seating followed a similarly thoughtful approach. The seat pads were finished in Camira Patternmaker Crosshatch PMC09, maintaining continuity with the pods, while the back panels featured Camira Mainline Archway. This pairing creates a balanced contrast between texture and tone, helping to define the seating area without making it feel overly formal.
These fabric choices are particularly well-suited to office environments. They offer durability for high-traffic use, meet contract standards and provide a refined aesthetic that elevates the overall look of the space. At the same time, they contribute to acoustic comfort, softening the environment and supporting the function of both the pods and breakout areas.
A Cohesive Workplace Environment
The finished Air Business office demonstrates how well-integrated furniture solutions can transform the way a workspace is used. The acoustic meeting pods provide essential privacy and focus areas within an open-plan layout, while the breakout seating introduces a welcoming, flexible zone for collaboration and relaxation.
Together, these elements create a workplace that feels both structured and adaptable, supporting a range of working styles without compromising on design. The consistent use of materials and finishes ties the space together, ensuring that each area feels connected as part of a cohesive whole.
For office fit-out companies, designers and commercial clients, this project highlights the value of considering furniture early in the design process. When acoustic pods and seating are specified with intent, they become more than just functional additions, they help define how a space works.
